The Batman is a superhero film based on the DC Comics character Batman that was released in 2022. It is a reboot of the Batman film franchise, produced by DC Films, 6th & Idaho, and Dylan Clark Productions, and released by Warner Bros. Pictures. Matt Reeves directed the picture, and he co-wrote the screenplay with Peter Craig. Along with Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell, it stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne / Batman. Batman, who has been combating crime in Gotham City for two years, uncovers corruption while chasing down the Riddler (Dano), a serial killer who preys on the city’s elite.

After Ben Affleck was cast as Batman in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) in 2013, development began. Affleck agreed to direct, produce, co-write, and appear in The Batman, but then stepped out due to concerns about the film. Reeves took over and rewrote the plot, erasing all references to the DCEU. He drew inspiration from Alfred Hitchcock’s films and the New Hollywood era, as well as comics like “Year One” (1987), The Long Halloween (1996–97), and Ego (1997–98) to explore Batman’s detective side more than prior films (2000). Pattinson was cast in May of this year, with further casting to follow in late 2019. Between January 2020 and March 2021, principal photography took place in the United Kingdom and Chicago.

On March 1, 2022, The Batman premiered at Lincoln Center in New York, and on March 4, 2022, it was released theatrically around the world. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was postponed twice from its original June 2021 release date. The film earned about $676 million worldwide against a budget of $185–200 million, making it the highest-grossing film of 2022. It was praised for its acting, photography, Reeves’ direction, action sequences, and story, however some criticised its length. It’s meant to kick off a shared universe for Batman, with two sequels planned and two spin-off television series in the works for HBO Max.

The Batman Plot

On Halloween, Don Mitchell Jr., the mayor of Gotham City, is assassinated by the Riddler. Bruce Wayne, a reclusive billionaire who has been operating as the vigilante Batman for two years, is investigating with the Gotham City Police Department (GCPD). Lieutenant James Gordon discovers a message left for Batman by the Riddler at the crime scene. Soon after, the Riddler assassinates Commissioner Pete Savage and leaves Batman with yet another message.

The Riddler put a thumb drive in Mitchell’s car containing photographs of Mitchell with a lady, Annika Koslov, at the Iceberg Lounge, a nightclub run by the Penguin, gangster Carmine Falcone’s henchman. Batman and Gordon uncover this. While the Penguin claims ignorance, Batman notes that Annika’s roommate and close friend, Selina Kyle, works as a waiter at the club. When Batman follows Selina home to question Annika, she vanishes, so he sends her back to the Iceberg Lounge to look for answers. Batman learns through Selina that Savage, like district attorney Gil Colson, is on Falcone’s payroll. When Batman questions Selina about her friendship with Falcone, she goes silent.

Colson is kidnapped by the Riddler, who straps a timed collar bomb to his neck and sends him to disrupt Mitchell’s funeral. When Batman arrives, the Riddler calls him on Colson’s phone, threatening to explode the bomb unless Colson can solve three riddles. Colson dies after refusing to answer the final question—the name of the informant who provided the GCPD with information that led to a major narcotics arrest that put an end to mobster Salvatore Maroni’s organisation. The Penguin could be the informant, so Batman and Gordon pursue him down to a heroin trade. They learn that Maroni’s operation has been entrusted to Falcone, and that a large number of GCPD personnel are participating. When Selina arrives to take money, she unintentionally exposes them. Selina discovers Annika’s body as the Penguin flees.

Following the Riddler’s trail, Batman and Gordon arrive at the ruins of an orphanage founded by Bruce’s dead parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne, where they find that the Riddler has a grudge against the Waynes. Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce’s butler and carer, gets hospitalised after opening a letter bomb meant to Bruce. The Riddler reveals that Thomas, who was campaigning for mayor at the time of his assassination, hired Falcone to assassinate a journalist for threatening to disclose embarrassing details about Martha’s mental illness history. Bruce confronts Alfred, who claims that Thomas just requested Falcone to intimidate the journalist into silence, and that he planned to turn himself and Falcone over to the police once he found out the truth.
