The Northman, directed by Robert Eggers and co-written by Eggers and Sjón, is a 2022 historical epic fantasy film. The film stars Alexander Skarsgrd, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk, and Willem Dafoe and is based on the mythology of Amleth. F The Northman had its global debut on March 28, 2022, in Stockholm, and is set to be released in the United States by Focus Features on April 22, 2022.

It was acclaimed by critics, with particular praise aimed at its direction, production values, atmosphere, and the performances of the cast.

Plot

Following the assassination of his father Aurvandill (Ethan Hawke) by his brother Claes Bang (Claes Bang), Viking prince Amleth flees his land, vowing to return and seek vengeance. Years later, Amleth (Alexander Skarsgrd), now enormous, learns that his violent uncle has lost the throne and is now a feudal lord. Amleth disguises himself as a slave in order to exact vengeance, but he must also consider his mother Gudrn (Nicole Kidman) and younger half-brother.

Alexander Skarsgård as Amleth, a Viking warrior prince.

Alexander Johan Hjalmar Skarsgrd is a Swedish actor who was born on August 25, 1976. He began performing at the age of seven in Stockholm, but stopped at the age of thirteen. He returned to acting after serving in the Swedish military, and his first role in a US film was in the comedy Zoolander. In the 2008 miniseries Generation Kill, he played Marine Brad Colbert. When he played vampire Eric Northman in the television series True Blood (2008–2014), he became a household name.

He starred in the drama series Big Little Lies (2017–2019) as an abusive husband, earning him a Primetime Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Critics’ Choice Television Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. He previously appeared in films such as Melancholia (2011), Battleship (2012), and The Legend of Tarzan (2016). From 2019 to 2021, he participated in the films Long Shot (2019) and Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), in the miniseries The Stand (2020–2021) as the devil Randall Flagg, and in the third season of the HBO drama series Succession as a guest role (2021).

Claes Kasper Bang (born April 28, 1967 in Denmark) is a Danish actor and musician. He is best recognised for his portrayal as Christian in Ruben stlund’s 2017 film The Square, which won the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or. He was the first Dane to win the European Film Award for Best Actor for that role. He starred as Count Dracula in the BBC/Netflix series Dracula in 2019, and he rose to international recognition by playing Sasha Mann in the final season of The Affair (2020).

Anya-Josephine Marie Taylor-Joy is an actress who was born on April 16, 1996. She has received numerous awards, including a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award, as well as a Primetime Emmy Award nomination. He made his film debut in the science fiction film Explorers in 1985, before breaking out with the drama Dead Poets Society in 1989. He acted in a number of films before landing a leading role in the Generation X movie Reality Bites in 1994, for which he gained critical acclaim. Hawke and Julie Delpy co-starred in Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy, which included Before Sunrise (1995), Before Sunset (2004), and Before Midnight (2006). (2013).
