James Cameron is the writer and director of the science fiction action picture Aliens, which was released in 1986. It is the follow-up to the science fiction horror picture Alien, which was released in 1979, and it is the second film in the Alien franchise overall. The film is set in the distant future, and Sigourney Weaver plays as the title character, Ellen Ripley. She is the lone survivor of an extraterrestrial attack on her spacecraft. Ripley agrees to go back to the human colony on the moon with a group of Colonial Marines in order to investigate after it is discovered that contacts have been lost with the location on where her team first came into contact with the alien species. Aliens featured Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, Lance Henriksen, and Carrie Henn in supporting roles.

Despite the commercial success of Alien, the production of its sequel required a significant amount of time. The production was held up by a number alien factors, including lawsuits, a lack of excitement from 20th Century Fox, and numerous management shifts. Cameron was engaged in 1983 to develop a plot for the film Aliens on the basis of the scripts he had previously written for the films The Terminator (1984) and Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985). The project came to a standstill once more until Lawrence Gordon, a new executive at Fox, began working on a sequel. Cameron was offered the director role despite having relatively little expertise in the field because of the success he had with filming The Terminator. In September of 1985, principal photography for the film Aliens got underway with a budget of around $18.5 million. Filming at Pinewood Studios was fraught with tension and disagreements between James Cameron and the British team, much like the production of the movie itself had been. The score for the movie was written by James Horner. The challenging shoot had a negative impact on Horner, who had very little time to record the music for the film.

Aliens was released in theatres on July 18, 1986, to widespread acclaim from reviewers. The severity of certain sequences drew some criticism from reviewers, despite the fact that the action in the movie was praised by most. The portrayal given by Weaver was singled out for constant praise, while the other members of the cast, including Bill Paxton and Jenette Goldstein, who played Colonial Marines, also garnered great feedback. At a time when science fiction films in general were not given a lot of attention, the picture was honoured with a number of prizes and nominations, including one for Weaver at the Academy Awards in the category of Best Actress.
