Steven Jobs, an American entrepreneur, innovator, and investor, was born on February 24, 1955, and passed away on October 5, 2011. He played a pivotal role in the personal computer industry and co-founded Apple, where he served as chairman and CEO. Additionally, he chaired Pixar and was a board member of The Walt Disney Company following its acquisition of Pixar. Furthermore, Jobs founded NeXT and held the position of chairman and CEO there as well. Alongside his fellow Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, he is widely recognized for his contributions to the personal computer revolution of the 1970s and 1980s.

Steve Jobs, a native of San Francisco, was born to a Syrian father and a mother of German-American descent. Following his birth, he was put up for adoption. In 1972, Jobs began attending Reed College but left before the academic year concluded. Seeking enlightenment and studying Zen Buddhism in India in 1974, he later co-founded Apple with Wozniak in 1976 to market the Apple I personal computer. The duo gained fame and wealth through the successful development and sale of the Apple II in 1977. Recognizing the commercial potential of the Xerox Alto in 1979, Jobs subsequently oversaw the creation of both the unsuccessful Apple Lisa in 1983 and the groundbreaking Macintosh in 1984—the first mass-produced computer with a graphical user interface. The introduction of the Apple LaserWriter alongside the Macintosh in 1985 significantly contributed to the emergence of desktop publishing.

Following a prolonged struggle for power with Apple’s board of directors and CEO John Sculley, Steve Jobs was dismissed from his role at Apple in 1985. During the same year, Jobs spearheaded the launch of NeXT, a company focused on developing computer platforms and manufacturing computers tailored for the education and corporate sectors. Serving as NeXT’s CEO, Jobs also provided financial backing to George Lucas’s Lucasfilm computer graphics division in 1986, which played a pivotal role in advancing the visual effects industry. This venture eventually evolved into Pixar, a prominent animation studio that has produced more than 20 films since its establishment in 1995. Notably, Pixar is recognized for creating the first-ever 3D computer-animated feature film called Toy Story.

After Apple acquired NeXT in 1997, Jobs returned to the company as CEO and played a crucial role in turning around its financial struggles. He collaborated closely with designer Jony Ive to develop a range of products that had a significant impact on culture, including the iMac, iPad, iPod, iPhone, and more. Jobs was responsible for the overall design of these products. The original Mac OS was replaced by Mac OS X in 2001, which later became known as macOS. This new operating system was built on NeXT’s NeXTSTEP platform, providing it with a modern Unix-based foundation for the first time. In 2003, Jobs was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumor of the pancreas. He passed away on October 5, 2011 due to respiratory arrest caused by the illness at the age of 56.

Based in Cupertino, California, United States, Apple Inc. is a global technology company that specializes in consumer devices, software, and online services. With operations worldwide, the company was ranked as the world’s second largest corporation by market capitalization and the fourth-largest personal computer vendor by unit sales as of May 2022. Additionally, it held the position of the second-largest mobile phone manufacturer. In 2021, Apple’s revenues reached US$365.8 billion, solidifying its status as the top technological company by revenue. Alongside Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta, Apple is recognized as one of the leading Big Five information technology corporations in the United States.

Apple was founded on April 1, 1976, by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne as Apple Computer Company. Their goal was to develop and sell Wozniak’s Apple I personal computer. The company was later renamed Apple Computer, Inc. in 1977. The release of the Apple II in the following year propelled the company to its greatest success yet. In 1980, Apple Computer went public and quickly achieved significant financial prosperity.

Ridley Scott directed the acclaimed commercial 1984 to launch the original Macintosh computer, which featured a groundbreaking graphical user interface. Despite widespread praise, the company faced challenges in 1985 due to high product costs and internal power struggles among executives. Wozniak left Apple amicably to explore other opportunities, while Jobs departed on less favorable terms to establish NeXT, taking some former Apple colleagues with him.

In the 1990s, the personal computer market expanded and evolved, causing Apple to lose market share to the more affordable combination of Microsoft Windows on Intel-powered PC clones. In 1997, facing bankruptcy, Apple acquired NeXT to address its operating system issues and bring back Steve Jobs. Under Jobs’ leadership, Apple regained profitability by introducing successful products like the iMac, iPod, iPhone, and iPad. They also launched impactful advertising campaigns, established Apple Stores, and acquired other companies to diversify their product offerings.
