Coraline 2 film
Henry Selick wrote and directed Coraline, a 2009 American stop-motion animated horror film based on Neil Gaiman’s novella of the same name. Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French, Keith David, John Hodgman, Robert Bailey Jr., and Ian McShane all lend their voices to the film, which is Laika’s first feature picture. The film follows the titular girl as she discovers an idealised parallel reality hidden behind a secret door in her new home, unaware that it hides a terrible and sinister secret.
After a global premiere at the Portland International Film Festival, the film was released theatrically in the United States on February 6, 2009 by Focus Features to critical acclaim. After Chicken Run and Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, the picture earned $16.85 million in its opening weekend, placing it third at the box office. By the conclusion of its run, it had grossed over $124 million worldwide, making it the third highest-grossing stop-motion film of all time. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and a Golden Globe for Best Production Design in an Animated Feature Production, as well as Annie Awards for Best Music in an Animated Feature Production, Best Character Design in an Animated Feature Production, and Best Production Design in an Animated Feature Production.
Coraline Jones struggles to adjust to her new life in the Pink Palace Apartments in Ashland, Oregon, after being neglected by her workaholic parents. She meets Wyborne “Wybie” Lovat, the landlady’s grandson, and a stray black cat. Wybie later gifts Coraline a button-eyed ragdoll he found in his grandmother’s trunk that looks eerily like her. Coraline is led to a little entrance in the apartment’s living room with a bricked-up wall behind it by the doll.
A mouse wakes Coraline up that night and leads her to the door, which has been transformed into a portal leading to a parallel reality that mirrors the real one. Coraline then meets her Other Mother and Father, button-eyed doppelgängers of her parents who seem more attentive and kind than her own parents. The next morning, she goes home, where Wybie tells her of his great aunt’s abduction. Sergei Alexander Bobinsky, an eccentric Chernobyl liquidator-turned-gymnast who owns a mouse circus, and retired burlesque actresses April Spink and Miriam Forcible, Coraline’s neighbours, send her cryptic warnings about impending danger.
Coraline returns to the Other World twice more, despite the warnings. She is entertained by the dimension’s doppelgängers of her neighbours and meets the cat, who has the ability to travel between the real world and the Other World and talk in the latter, accompanied by the mute Other Wybie. The Other Mother offers Coraline the chance to live in the Other World permanently in exchange for having buttons put over her eyes on her third visit. Coraline is terrified and wants to return to her world, but the Other Mother stops her and imprisons her in a room behind a mirror. There, she encounters the spirits of the Other Mother’s victims, one of whom is Wybie’s great aunt, and they all refer to her as “the Other Mother.”
