In 1990, the American comedy film Home Alone was brought to life by director Chris Columbus and writer John Hughes. The movie marked the beginning of the Home Alone series and featured a cast including Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern, John Heard, and Catherine O’Hara. Culkin portrayed Kevin McCallister, a young boy who defends his Chicago residence from burglars when his family accidentally leaves him behind during their trip to Paris. The concept for Home Alone was conceived by Hughes while he was getting ready for his vacation.

Initially planned to be funded by Warner Bros., production faced challenges due to budget constraints, leading 20th Century Fox to take over after secretive discussions with Hughes. Columbus and Culkin joined the project shortly after, with filming taking place in various locations across Illinois from February to May 1990. The movie premiered in Chicago on November 10 and hit theaters nationwide on November 16 of the same year. Home Alone received positive reviews for its talented cast, humor, and music but faced some criticism regarding its plot. Despite this feedback, it went on to gross $476.7 million globally, holding the title of highest-grossing live-action comedy until The Hangover Part II (2011) was released and propelling Culkin into stardom as a child actor.

The film garnered nominations for several awards including Golden Globe Awards and Academy Awards for categories such as Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Original Score by John Williams among others. Over time, Home Alone has solidified its place as one of the most beloved Christmas movies ever made. A sequel titled Home Alone 2: Lost in New York followed in 1992.
