The album featured the iconic song, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me),” which quickly became a global smash hit. In honor of the anniversary, we’re taking a look back at the making of the song and its impact on pop culture.

“I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” was written by George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam of the duo Boy Meets Girl. The song was originally pitched to Madonna, but she turned it down. Once Houston got her hands on the track, she knew it was perfect for her. The upbeat, feel-good message of the song resonated with audiences around the world and helped make “Whitney” the best-selling debut album by a female artist at the time.

Whitney Houston Marriage

Whitney Houston’s marriage to Bobby Brown was one of the most talked about celebrity unions of the early ’90s. The pair met in 1989 and married three years later, despite public opinion that their relationship was doomed from the start.

Whitney Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, was found unresponsive in a bathtub on January 31, 2015. CPR was performed and she was rushed to the hospital where she remained in a coma for six months. Bobbi Kristina died on July 26, 2015 at the age of 22.
