Labyrinth is a 1986 musical fantasy film directed by Jim Henson and produced by George Lucas, based on Brian Froud’s conceptual concepts. It follows Sarah (Jennifer Connelly), a 16-year-old girl, on her mission to reach the centre of an immense otherworldly maze in order to save her infant half-brother Toby (Toby Froud), whom Sarah unintentionally wishes away to Jareth, The Goblin King (David Bowie). Apart from Bowie and Connelly, the majority of the film’s prominent characters are performed by puppets created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.

Following their previous collaboration, The Dark Crystal, the film began as a collaboration between Henson and Froud (1982). Early in 1984, Terry Jones of Monty Python penned the first draught of the film’s script, drawing inspiration from Froud’s illustrations. Laura Phillips, Lucas, Dennis Lee, and Elaine May were among the scriptwriters who reworked and added to it, while Jones was given sole screenwriting credit. It was shot on location in Upper Nyack, Piermont, and Haverstraw, New York, as well as at Elstree Studios and West Wycombe Park in the United Kingdom, from April to September 1985.

According to the New York Times, Labyrinth had a $25 million budget. The picture was a box office flop, collecting only $12.9 million during its theatrical run in the United States. According to his son Brian Henson, it was Henson’s final feature picture, and its bad response contributed to a tough phase in his career. When it was first released, it received mixed reviews, but it has since been re-evaluated by reviewers and has developed a cult following. Between 2006 and 2010, Tokyopop published the four-volume comic sequel Return to Labyrinth. A sequel was announced in January 2016, which screenwriter Nicole Perlman described as a “spin-off” in the same fictitious realm.

PLOT

Sarah Williams, a 16-year-old girl, recites from the novel The Labyrinth in the park with her dog Merlin, but she forgets the last line while being watched by a barn owl. She runs home after realising she is late for babysitting her newborn half-brother Toby, only to be confronted by her stepmother Irene, who then leaves for dinner with Sarah’s father Robert. Sarah discovers Toby with her prized childhood teddy bear Lancelot. Sarah is annoyed by this, as well as his incessant screaming, and wishes hastily that the goblins from her novel take Toby away.

When Toby vanishes and the Goblin King Jareth arrives, she is taken aback. He gives Sarah her dreams in return for the kid, but she declines, regretting her choice right afterwards. Jareth reluctantly grants Sarah 13 hours to navigate his maze and locate Toby before he is permanently transformed into a goblin. Sarah meets Hoggle, a dwarfish man who assists her in entering the labyrinth. She first has difficulty finding her way, until she meets a talking worm who accidentally leads her in the wrong path.

Sarah finds herself in an oubliette, where she meets Hoggle. Jareth confronts the two, but they manage to escape one of his traps and come face to face with a gigantic beast named Ludo. Sarah befriends Ludo after releasing him from a trap, but she loses him in a forest. Hoggle departs in a cowardly manner. When Hoggle meets Jareth, he is given an enchanted peach and told to give it to Sarah, which calls into doubt his devotion because he was supposed to lead her back to the beginning of the labyrinth. A bunch of animals known as The Fire Gang harasses Sarah, but Hoggle comes to her rescue. She kisses him happily, prompting them to tumble into a trapdoor that transports them to a foul marsh known as the Flatulent Swamp.

The three encounters the swamp’s guard as well as Sir Didymus, an anthropomorphic fox, and his sheepdog “steed” Ambrosius. Didymus joins the party when Ludo summons a trail of rocks to save Sarah from falling into the swamp. Hoggle grudgingly gives Sarah the fruit and flees as she slips into a trance and forgets her quest as the company grows hungry. Jareth appears to her in a dream at a masquerade ball, declaring his love for her, but she rejects him and flees, ending up in a junkyard. She is rescued by Ludo and Didymus outside the Goblin City of Jareth’s palace after an old Junk Lady fails to brainwash her. The colossal robotic gate guard confronts them, but Hoggle is unfazed.

The company’s presence is detected, and Jareth sends his goblin army to stop them. However, Ludo summons a slew of rocks to chase the goblins away, and the gang enters the castle. Sarah insists on facing Jareth alone, promising to summon the others if necessary. She faces Jareth in a chamber modelled like M. C. Escher’s Relativity while attempting to reclaim Toby. She recites the lines from her book that correspond to her current journey, but she can’t recall the last phrase. When Sarah recalls the line, “You have no control over me!” Jareth offers Sarah her dreams. When Jareth transforms back into his barn owl nature and flies away, he defeats Sarah and Toby at the last second.
