Top 20 New Video Games at Gamescom 2024
Gamescom is regarded as the world’s largest computer and video game event, and as such, we learn a lot of new stuff about what’s coming down the pipeline.
Dying Light: The Beast
At number 20, it’s Dying Light: The Beast—a completely brand new, tightly designed adventure with the original Dying Light protagonist, Kyle Crane. This might come as a surprise to players of the original Dying Light, considering the two possible endings of the game. Whether it’s pink eye or some kind of virus that gives him Beast Powers, we don’t know. They’ve been calling it a tightly crafted Standalone Adventure, which is interesting. It definitely implies a smaller game, but I kind of like the idea of a focused Dying Light. We have no idea when this game is going to land, but it’s something to look forward to, that’s for sure.
Kong: Survivor Instinct
Number 19 is Kong: Survivor Instinct. This was announced the day before Gamescom, but aligning the announcement with Gamescom, I’m going to count it. This is a side-scrolling platforming action game, and that’s, in my opinion, a pretty refreshing surprise for a Kong game. It places us shortly after the events of 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong movie. The trailer didn’t show us any Godzilla action, but we are going to see Abidon, a character we’ve never seen in a video game before. This game is coming in Fall of this year to the PlayStation 5. My one gripe is the voice acting in the trailer, which wasn’t particularly good. However, other aspects of this game look promising.
Rean: Animal
Number 18 is Rean: Animal by Taser Studios, the creators of Little Nightmares. This one is a surreal co-op horror adventure game starring an orphan brother and sister trying to rescue their friends. It has a shared camera between the two players, designed to maximize claustrophobia and tension. You can play this game in local co-op or over the Internet. The game looks very cinematic and scary, and it’s coming to PS5, Xbox Series, and PC.
Arc Raiders
Number 17 is Arc Raiders. This isn’t a new announcement, but it’s a third-person PVPVE action survival shooter from the developers behind The Finals, Embark. The game is a post-apocalyptic extraction shooter. You can now sign up for a play test that will start in the fall, and the game is slated for release next year.
Marvel Rivals
Number 16 is Marvel Rivals, which is kind of like Marvel’s Overwatch. The game will feature all characters unlockable and free to play. The release date is set for December 6th, and I’m looking forward to trying it out.
Herdling
Number 15 is Herdling, a completely new game from the developers behind Far: Changing Tides and Lone Sales. It’s a shepherding game featuring creatures called Calic Horns. The game looks very pretty and refreshing. We don’t have a release date yet, but it’s something new and interesting.
Batman Arkham Shadow
Number 14 is Batman: Arkham Shadow. Although I am skeptical of VR games, this one looks promising. The gameplay footage from Gamescom shows a lot of potential. Unfortunately, it’s a Meta Quest exclusive, but it looks like a lot of fun and is coming in October.
King of Meat
Number 13 is King of Meat. This game features user-generated dungeons and has a hacking-slash dungeon battler style. It has a bit of a Crash Bandicoot feel in terms of art style. Although we don’t have release information yet, it looks fantastic and is being developed by Amazon.
Monster Hunter Wilds
Number 12 is Monster Hunter Wilds. The third trailer for this game shows off how beautiful it is. It’s a follow-up to Monster Hunter World, featuring new monsters and a vibrant color palette. The game is set to release in 2025.
Predecessor
Number 11 is Predecessor. This game has a history of playtesting and is described as a cross between a MOBA and a third-person shooter. It has now launched and is available to play on Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox.
Linked: Banner of the Spark
Number 10 is Linked: Banner of the Spark from developer Fuzzybot. This game looks like an action rogue like combined with Mega Man. It’s bright, fun, and cartoony, and it’s coming out next year.
Monument Valley 3
Number 9 is Monument Valley 3. This perspective-shifting puzzle game looks like a bigger adventure than its predecessors. It’s set to release on December 10th.
Masters of Alon
Number 8 is Masters of Alon. This Peter Molyneux game is a combination of a god game and a tower defense game. It looks promising, although we don’t have a release date yet.
Squid Game Video Game
Number 7 is a Squid Game video game. Connected to the upcoming season 2 of Squid Game, this game features cool squid game challenges in a cel-shaded and whimsical style. It’s coming on December 26th.
Civilization 7
Number 6 is Civilization 7. The game introduces new systems like the Ages system, dividing the game into Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern segments. It’s set to release on February 11th.
Black Ops 6
Number 5 is Black Ops 6. The campaign gameplay looks promising, and it’s set to release on October 26th.
Secret Level
Number 4 is Secret Level, a series of stories based on various video game IPs coming to Amazon. It’s made by the creators of Love, Death & Robots and features notable IPs like Armored Core and Mega Man.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
Number 3 is Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. The game features hard-hitting combat and fun whip mechanics. It’s coming to Xbox and PC on December 9th, with a PS5 release in Spring 2025.
Mafia: The Old Country
Number 2 is Mafia: The Old Country. Set in early 20th century Sicily, this game offers a refreshing change of pace from the usual Mafia games set in the United States. It’s set to release in 2025.
Borderlands 4
Finally, they announced Borderlands 4. This looter shooter is set to release in 2025. If you know Borderlands, you know what to expect.
